Kateri Program at Collier High School

The Kateri Program is a specialized component of the Collier High School.  Here, students engage in a highly individualized learning experience that blends intensive therapeutic services with academic challenges, career exploration, community engagement, and enjoyable recreational activities.  Within our small, safe, and nurturing community, students identify and address their unique social, emotional, and behavioral challenges as they develop the skills to function successfully in a complex adult world.

Special emphasis is placed on building a community within this program by creating opportunities for recreational and team building projects.  Students complete a 21st Century Career Exploration course and participate in community based instruction in various service areas both on and off campus.

Extended School Year

Routine Schedule:

Students participate in both academic and recreational/work-based learning activities to provide a balanced schedule that allows students to practice life and social skills while maintaining their academic commitment. This structure aids in transitioning students into the regular school year by maintaining their daily routine.

Support Services:

Students continue to receive support from assigned counselors and related service staff such as Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Therapy, and counseling.

Academics:

Students have an academic course daily that covers a wide range of subjects from Science to Building Trades, ensuring students receive well-rounded academics during their Extended School Year in Kateri.

Workstations:

Students participate in "Workstations" during their mornings with various community and team-building activities. They are encouraged to participate in activities such as their own Podcast, beach clean-ups, and outdoor activities like biking at the Henry Hudson Trail. Students also participate in volunteer work, helping both Project Paul and Lunch Break, two local nonprofits, last summer. One student shared that his favorite part of Kateri's Extended School Year was "packing meals for those in need. "

Reflection Sheet:

Students maintain their "Reflection sheet" that is used during their regular academic school year. The reflection sheet allows students to recognize their own behaviors and reflect on them on their own as well as with staff. Students are also offered a club or "reset" towards the end of the day as a way to wind down from their busy day.
